How to Calculate GPA on a 4.0 Scale

GPA, or grade point average, converts course grades into a single number. Many schools in the United States and Canada use a 4.0 scale, although grading rules can vary.

Use the GPA Calculator to enter courses, grades, and credit hours. It can estimate semester GPA and cumulative GPA.

Basic GPA steps

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points.
  2. Multiply grade points by course credit hours.
  3. Add all quality points together.
  4. Divide by total credit hours.

Example

If you earn an A in a 3-credit course, that course may count as 12 quality points. If you earn a B in another 3-credit course, that may count as 9 quality points. Together, 21 quality points divided by 6 credits gives a 3.5 GPA.

Weighted grades

If you need to calculate a class average before GPA, use the Grade Calculator. If you need to convert scores into percentages, use the Percentage Calculator.
